Emmett Technique is another Australian-developed modality, developed by Ross Emmett, a former Bowen Therapy instructor. A relatively new technique, it was launched in Australia in 1999, and has since been rolled out to over 40 countries.
a very light touch technique
Emmett Technique is a light touch therapy that triggers a relaxation response in the body’s soft tissue.
The Emmett technique uses a combination of gentle switches and light finger pressure to release specific muscle groups. This enables the person’s body to return to its balanced state.
During a session, light pressure is applied on the client’s Emmett points using the Emmett finger or the middle finger of their hand. This process is said to release the trauma stored in these points, along with the pain, and allows the muscles to work as they should.
your body is like a touch screen
Emmett Therapy utilises an understanding of the response of the human body to light touch. It is suggested that the body reacts in a similar way to a touch-screen device. The small sensors in the body, known as Emmett points, allow access to the brain through the gentle touch in specific points.
Just as you see the response on the screen when you use a touch screen, I feel the response in the body as a touch the right spots. While many clients don’t feel anything during an Emmett move, I feel vibrations happening under the skin when the right move is in the right spot.
my approach to Emmett
While Emmett Therapy is an effective standalone therapy, I tend to use it more to complement my Bowen work.
I’ll use some Emmett moves if a client’s body feels too tender to some Bowen moves. If I give clients moves to continue at home between treatments, they will most often be Emmett moves.
Treatment can be done through light clothing. Highly adaptable, many moves are best done seated or standing – a great choice if lying down is problematic.
